Removing Ancient Vinyl Tile

d_random profile photo

Next week I will be replacing what I think is vinyl tile in a kitchen.

This stuff is old, could be the original, on a 50 year old house. Do you think

it would have asbestos in it? If so, what safety precautions should I take?

What is the easiest ways to remove?

Thanks!

Crap. Did they have asbestos in those as well? I thought it was just siding.

Can you lay the lenolium on top of it? Or is this a COMPLETE rehab job? What area are you working in BTW?

You can first have it tested for asbestos. If positive, you may be better off contracting this out.

Follow-up question: When putting vinyl on top of vinyl, is there any special prep that needs to be done besides making sure the old floor is clean?[ Edited by d_random on Date 03/20/2008 ]

I would cover the floor with thin plywood and nail it down well if you can spare the quarter inch. Basically bury the problem of potential asbestos. The only problem with asbestos is when it is disturbed. Personally I think the asbestos problem is very overblown...leave it alone and you will be ok most of the time.

a 50 yr old floor that is composed of 9 inch tiles is generally asbestos...the trouble is not in the handling ...it is in the disposal...the suggestion on covering w/ a thin plywood or hardiboard is probably the best solution...regards, CWal

    I agree: Cover it up.

if you are too worried about it, and the area is not too big, get some mis-tinted cheap paint and paint the entire floor area with a thick coat or two. then lay the new vinyl ( the non-glue type) and everything will be just fine.
