Best Drought Resistant Lawn

I live in the southeast, there has been a drought here every summer for the last few years. It is pointless (and costly) to plant grasses that require watering. I need suggestions for green ground cover that is drought resistant. Thanks!

Turf is simply not drought resistant if there is no water. Have you considered using ice plant instead? They are low maintenance, drought resistant, hardy flowering (if you want), and they choke out weeds very well.

I would invest some time/money in non-turf plants. Plant flowerbeds with drought resistent plants/shrubs. Put ground cover in places. Update the irrigation systems so they use the least amount of water. Where you must plant grass (or want grass) chose drought reistent types (buffalo grass is a good one, at least in texas). Stay away from St. Augustine (water hog). Deep rooted fescue grass is not bad either. I replaced part of my Kentucky bluegrass yard with fescue, and it was/is green for 2 weeks after the kentucky blue grass gave up. Plant deeped rooted plants, water deeply, but infrequently

I have great lbor in the 10-12$ range with a contractor at $28 we keep busy almost 100% of the time.

Electricians I can find and plumbers in the $30 range who work for someone else and are looking for a little side money. You have to look around.

Drywall I pay .14 sf (of wall space) to hang and .20 to tape with a flat finish. This is for a minimum of 40 sheets.

Check with your hispanic community and see what comes up. Many of them are great workers and fast..

From rastegar on 04-05-2008 But we are legally allowed to do our own work

Rastegar My question comes from your above statement. Are you legally allowed to do your own work because you own the property?? Is this a county, state, or federal law?

Keep in mind we are from Missouri.

Reason for my question is that I am thinking about getting a property that needs some work done (don’t they all) and I and my brother want to do it ourselves’. Someone told me the city has an ordinance that prohibits us from doing our own work.

We are not licensed to do anything (except drive our vehicles). However, with that being said, he is a maintenance man with the state prison system, does all kinds of maintenance, elect pulm, carp etc. very good at his work. I, on the other hand, taught school, (Ind Ed or Shop) so know wood, taught elect and plumbing classes plus in the military I was a certified Elect, Plum, and carpenter worker AND instructor. I taught these kinds of classes for several years. So we certainly CAN (are able) do the work.

    HVAC will be contracted out.

So, back to my question. Are there any laws that allow the home owners to do their own work?

    Your right ypochris.

I saved a beautiful article off this site about how to get the right contractors. I believe if I follow the ideas in that article, I should be able to assemble one helluva crew.[ Edited by newtree on Date 04/18/2008 ]
