Read the Virginia Landlord Tenant Law about abandoned tenant personal property. I believe you will have to serve him notice and store for a certain period of time before you can dispose of it.
Oh, and be sure you followed the terms of the lease in terminating the lease.

Check this out...I recently bought a triplex, and we knew that the one "troublemaker" tenant wasnt even on the exising rental agreement...he moved in with his girlfriend.

I asked him repeatedly to fill out an application and to go through the motions in order to become a possible valid tenant.
No response...until one day he calls and says that someone threw a molitov cocktail on his car and burned it to ashes...while it was parked on the property, and he had the nerve to ask if our property insurance would cover his car!!

I served him a 30 day notice to vacate on Dec. 22.

    Good times...
