Property Still In The House

I have a client that a tenant broke the lease 3 months early and left property in the house. There was no notice given and phone calls are not being returned. It has been over a month now since they left. The owners have called them several times and they have not returned any calls. What is the law in California on personal property that is in the house? I know you should take it out and store it for some time, but how long? Do the tenants have any recourse? The deposit received does not even cover the rent for one month.

Thank you for the replies. I am on track of what I was thinking. I just need to know how long I need to hold onto the property according to California law. Anyone know the exact time frame?
