How Much To Paint A House?

myfrogger profile photo

I am surprised that no one has asked this. I have painted houses before and realize that it takes FOREVER! What's a typical cost to hire people to paint a 1200-1500 sq ft house? How long does it usually take to get done?

Both interior and exterior prices...I was assuming around $2000 each. I know this is very open ended but i'm just wanting a ball park idea. I'm toying with the idea of hiring the painting out.[ Edited by myfrogger on Date 12/10/2003 ]

I don't have my exterior prices in front of me but I rehabbed a house a year and a half ago and got a bit for $2800 for the interior from a pro. I had my daughter do it for about $1400 and it took her more than a week with help from her friends.
The house is 1254 sq. ft.

I just had a small house and garage done. Total approx 1500 sq ft.
I bought the paint and the painter charged $1200.
It took about 2 days , then rain a couple days, then trim and finish , so less than a week[ Edited by LynLinz on Date 12/10/2003 ]

Where do you find your workers?

  • BAMZ12th December, 2003

I'll just through some caution out there, that most of the time, you get what you pay for. I can find guys who call themselves "painters" in my area who will only charge me $10-$15 bucks per hour. These are the same guys that spill paint on the carpets and floors, who overlap paint on the stained trim woodwork, and who show up to work for only 3-4 hours a day!

I'm not saying that you cant find a good worker at a low price, but I am saying that it is less likley.

If you've got a nice property and you want it painted fast and painted right, I've found it best to go straight to the paint professionals for bids. You can find these small 3-5 man companies by looking in your yellow pages or getting several referrals from the locat paint store!

    Best of Success!

we have a couple locations here in long island where you can go 7 days a week and pick up workers..they literally wait for contractors to come and pick them up so they can work. you can find skilled labor from masons, landscapers, to work horses who can do demolishion work for you...you just have to be on the job to supervise and show them what you need to have done...a lot of this guys are illegal aliens so everything is cash after the work is completed.

The comment that you get what you pay for is very accurate. On the other hand, when I am doing a complete remodel, and I don't care how sloppy the painters are, I usually employ the cheap painters. They do slop paint, but if I am replacing carpet anyway, and the woodwork is very minimal, it doesn't matter...

I just painted a 2000sf home I bought a Spraytech srayer for $700 (If I'm in RE I will be painting a lot) I set up an account at a paint store (don't buy paint at a warehouse store) and got a discount on the paint. So I used about 4 1/2 buckets of paint and did a coat in about 4 hours alone. Add some masking time and clean up time plus each coat drying over night. It took about 3 or 4 days but not all day long, so I still had time for other projects. Man I HATE painting.

You might try hiring some motivated college or HS kids. Get references, of course. You need to use good judgment about who you select but I know there are lots of bright and responsible kids out there who are willing to work cheap.

I can't imagine paying someone 1200-1400 to paint for me. I can paint the whole house (interior) myself in a week only putting in 3-4 hours a day. Tape & prep one day, then paint. I use a machine. It takes about a gallon at a time and does a room in an hour or a little more if I'm doing a ceiling too. If I paint the ceiling walls the same light nuetral color I don't have to worry about getting the wall paint on the ceiling or visa versa. I do know a professional that will paint at $100.0 bucks a room but I haven't used him yet. I know he is good cause I've seen his work. I guess I'd rather pay myself for the work instead of someone else. Better the money in my pocket than theirs!

When I bought my own house, one level was not painted. The realtor gave me an estimate from a painter, $10,000 for about 2000 sqft. The owner said she will give me $5000 discount on price. My wife is an aspiring interior decorator. She picked different colors for different room, trims, etc. We hired some people from NYC from an ethnic neighborhood, my wife supervised the work. It cost us $2000.

My neighbor came to see. He bought one of those $700 paint sprayers (he is not a painter, he just bought it to paint his own house) and said I am welcome to borrow his to paint the exterior. He is just glad it is being used.
