John-
I'd PM you but I can't.
This post is in regards to "My Post Wasn't An Advertisement! It Was My Spreadsheet!" in the Landlord forum. Below for convenience:

Just curious as to why my post was deleted? I wasn't selling anything, or pimping a website. The only possible association was the car enthusiast host where the file is located which is hardly an overt nefarious act.

The spreadsheet was something I created based on other's input, and its free for the taking.

So any insight into why it was pulled would be nice, as well as how I can share the information if I can't do it hte way I did.

Thanks,

Talk to one of the administrators about putting it on the FREE STUFF section... I don't know if there is still one, but there used to be one...

I would be interested in looking at it if it got put on this website!

Good Luck!

They still have a Freebies section under Products and Services. You need an upgrade to use it: to upload or download.

I was looking into it and wondering why this was taken as advertising. There seems to be info which was already taken care of hence the topic title but this particular discussion seems to be about TCI related stuff and I did not see any edit remarks. Thanks.

    3qu1ty,

I did receive a pm from you and answered it however here is my take.

You have a channel partner who sells some calculators, I am sure he would be pleased if the free calculator did what his does, you also have a freebie section for free items, it would be up to Joel as to whether he wants to put it in this section.

If you allow everyone who has something to give away free to advertise even saying it is free, then how do we know what happens after this person brings in members of this site on a free item, then we find out that it was free to get in but not to get out without buying something else from this person.

Free is the strongest word in advertising, the way this guy beefed about his free spreadsheet being deleted, makes me wonder why this good hearted sole did not just ask a Moderator or Joel about his free product.

    PS:

Just leaving this up says he has a product. "My Post Wasn't An Advertisement! It Was My Spreadsheet."

"The spreadsheet was something I created based on other's input, and its free for the taking. "

PM him and tell him where he can put his free spreadsheet.[ Edited by JohnLocke on Date 06/17/2004 ]

Well, not trying to pee in anybody cornflakes here (especially since I not aware of the post that you are referring), but just to clarify a point.

The calculator selling channel partner's program looks very much like the free on that has been offered on other REI sites for a number of years. Personally, I think that it is simply remarkable that he has managed to sell this free program on this site. Add to that, that that channel partner rarely posts here anymore and if so, it's just to bash the site or the moderators. Given all that, I feel that deleting a post offering a free product of a similar nature is going above and beyond the call of duty, so to speak.

    Raj,

I noticed a slight bias in your post, I don't like him either just for the record, however my real concern was when was the last time you got anything Free.

It is difficult to judge who is really trying to be just a nice person and who will rip a members wallet off once they get a hold of them.

This poster should pay the $24.95 and both of us would go out of or way to make sure it got to the Freebie section I assume this is why he can't get the spreadsheet on the site.

We could call it "The Solution To The Kids Spreadsheet."

I'm on the fence as to whether this was a true violation but nonetheless there was no (Landlording) REI value added in the actual post so it was removed. Thanks for the comments.

I actually bought the spreadsheet from the kid and then rebuilt it to my specs. I liked it as it gave me a basis to start from since I am not real computer literate when it comes to spreadsheets and web pages.
