To get the item removed, go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get your free credit report from all three bureaus. Follow the directions given to dispute inaccurate information. This process can take over a month to complete.

If the account is being paid on time and your credit is otherwise acceptable, then your lender/broker can have their credit reporting agency contact the mortgage lender reporting the inaccurate information and update the report being used to make you a loan. This process can be completed in a day or so, and costs little or nothing. It will not change your credit score however.

If the account has late payments and/or is currently past due, it is affecting your credit score. If the inaccurate mortgage is the major or only item affecting your score the lender/broker can have a "rapid rescore" performed to have the three bureaus correct the inaccurate information within just a few days. Then your credit profile can be re-scored without the inaccurate information. The cost for this service is typically $25 per bureau per item. So $75 to remove one inaccurate item from all three bureaus. This service is only available from your mortgage broker/lender. Caution, a rapid rescore does not guarantee an increase in your score and can even result in a lower score in rare instance.
