401k Vs Real Estate Investing

neophyte1 profile photo

I am currently contributing the maximum amt to my 401k. Does this make sense from a real estate investor standpoint? My properties are providing me with a pretty decent tax shelter on my non passive income. Why save for retirement through my 401k when my properties could also be a good source of retirement income. Add your thoughts pls.

Does your employer match your 401(k) contributions? If so, may be a pretty strong reason to stay in your 401(k) plan.[ Edited by DaveT on Date 02/14/2004 ]

You shouldn't invest in anything that you don't research. Most people don't know what their 401's are even buying for them.

Make sure you know what your money is buying, and you are comfortable with it. This is a long term investment.

If the money you are investing in your 401k is "disposable income" than keep investing there.

If you've already provided for a nest egg in savings, then you may want to start to think about adding other investments such as money markets, bonds, cd's, etc.
