Why Is My Age Such A Problem?

azct24 profile photo

I’m having trouble with some of my short sale deals. And my dilemma is this…

I am 24 and look 21. When I deal with most people on my short sale projects I get the feeling these people don’t take me seriously. On my “day job” I am a firefighter, and by no means can you describe me as timid or soft spoken but I am definitely not cocky or overly aggressive. I know how to get the deals done and am educated in the entire process, as I have finished deals in the past, but I need some pointers.

If you investors from different aspects of a short sale were dealing with a 24 year old what would you need from me to feel comfortable with the transaction? How could someone like me eliminate your doubts?

Please understand I get this from everyone from my lenders, realtors, appraisers, contractors etc. I need true examples on what sells you investors. I have brought this up before and am tired of the “just keep it up” suggestion like my parents used to give me growing up. I want to be handled as a colleague and client, not a person in need of parental guidance. I don’t want my age to be holding me back from my goals. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day : )

You would be surprised how far a little facial hair can go to overcome many preconceptions regarding age. That being said, Looking 40, but sounding inexperienced, will give off similar objections. When selling yourself, practice makes perfect. With your practice, rehearse clear and concise responses to common objections. This will add to your confidence level which will result in more successful meetings & presentations.

Self perception including "age is a problem" can be said for any age or condition. Too old, too young. Too short. Too tall. To thin. Too fat. Too early. Too late.
    Too little. Too much. etc.

    Just be yourself.
