Is Mold A Problem?

Hey all....
Just picked up a cabin to flip. The ceiling in the kitchen has spotty areas of what looks like mold. It is black and gray in color. This place has not been heated in months, is damp, and is on a approximately 2 acre wooded parcel which just happens to be buried in about 3 feet of snow.
I have never dealt with mold before this place..... Is getting rid of it as simple as replacing the drywall and turning on the heat? It is dangerous to inhale the stuff...? Any insight will be appreciated.
Thanks!

Is getting rid of it as simple as replacing the drywall and turning on the heat?

No, not at all, in fact turning on the heat is going to make it worse. You need to find out where the moisture is coming from and stop it. Mold needs moisture to grow. Without eliminating the moisture source the mold will just come back.

It is dangerous to inhale the stuff?

Yes, it can be. Getting a really bad sinus infection might just be the least that happens to you. Buy a mold rated mask just to be on the safe side.

    Bring on the MOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mold is one of the best things you can find in a rehab project. It eliminates a lot of competition and drops the price of the property dramatically. Scares the hell out of people from all the media hype, but in reality is not a health hazzard to 99.999% of the population.

As the rehabinator has stated, the mold is not the problem, it's the moisture. Find the cause of the moisture, eliminate it and you eliminate the mold. Make sure you find all the other damage as a result of the moisture and watch the price of the property go down when you talk to the owner.
