If you go to Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, other...
You can buy 1x3 boards for <$1. Cut them into three pieces (cut at an angle and they go into the ground real nice). It is quick and easy. Not to mention, cheap.

Thanks for the reply, can you be a little more specific. Not sure what you mean by 1x3 boards, do you mean stakes? Do you have an item name, what section it's in...or an item number?

At HD or Lowes, you should be able to find concrete block reinforcement wire. It is a strip if sturdy wire that looks like a ladder. You will need a decent set of bolt cutters, or something similar, to cut it. You can use this product for bandit signs.

If you want the wooden stakes, do as the poster above states. Go down the wood isle and find the 1x3 wood and then cut to length.

You might want to cut each end of the steaks that you will be placing in the ground to a v shape for easier insertion.

Thanks, I know what you're talking about for the concrete wire at HD. I read about that somewhere else. Unfortunately up where I am they don't carry it at all. I even gave them the item number, but it doesn't seem to match for us. I guess I'll have to stick to wooden stakes. I figure it would be better then to just use horizontal flutes, better resistance to wind?

Hello Snek... I use horizontal flute for tha treason.. I have a sign that has been up all winter and no problems with it..

For Heaven's sake! Just buy the stakes. Wooden stakes are .24 to .36 Ea. at home depot. Why go through all that time and effort cutting stakes or making them from fence wire. Time is MONEY!

hey just a quick note about bandit signs...i agree w/previous posts, stakes are cheap .24/ea i got at HD.

In my area, city picks up the signs regularly...too cheap to spend $2.50/ea on bandit signs...so i used neon paper inside sheet protectors, then nailed to stakes w/roofer's nails...they hold up good at least for a couple weeks... cost per sign about $0.30-$0.35 versus a couple bucks each...!!!

    Good luck all

    Hey,

People worry about the strangest things! I mean if you overpaid 50% for stakes, that would be an extra $5.00.

Worry about the whole sign being stolen or destroyed or the message on the sign, but trying to figure out how to save $0.10 per STACK is really counter-productive.

Thanks everyone who replied. Just to clarify I was actually talking about those wire stakes, the ones that cost about $80/100 that I see online.

I read somewhere else about buying some concrete mesh and cutting it which would bring your cost down to about $35/100. After doing this for maybe 500 signs, it adds up rolleyes

    I wasn't doing this to save a penny...more like a dime :-D

Anyway, I'm now going with the wooden stakes at home depot since they don't carry concrete mesh up here.
