Real Estate On The Moon

scott_mn profile photo

Okay don't flame me here and maybe this may be is a light hearted post but I was thinking backwards as I typically do and wondering how I lock up land on the moon. Of course someone else has thought of this before me, just search google for moon shop.

My question to anybody then is legally you cannot convey land on the moon right? I doubt there is a tax and use. No country really owns the moon so does that mean any dispute to land would be handled in a international court.

I don't think I'm all that crazy in asking this because I used to own a record label and I always found it kind of strange that my artists never argued with me when my lawyers put in the standard contract that we sell thier music and likeness throughout the world and the known universe. Not much correlation but similiar outragous request.

So what are the issues about future ownership on the moon? What is stopping me from starting a REIT and building townhomes for baby boomers on the moon?

    Only your imagination

  • Ruman10th December, 2003

Because we can't live on the moon yet.

  • scott_mn10th December, 2003

Both good points, although once we couldn't go the speed of sound.

I'm not the best sales man but I'm almost positive I couild get some takers on....

Rent To Own! Great secluded location, wake up to majestic views of the rising earth.

comps would just be hard that's all.

Honestly though, I am partially serious... okay light the match, start the flame.

I see a couple of problems here (LOL)

On the deed you need a legal discription and assessor parcel number...Do you have them for the moon???

Has anyone measured the property lines???

To record the deed which county would you record in???

    Food for thought

I read an article about a guy that filed with the UN for ownership of all the land on the moon. If I recall some non-coherent person gave it to him.

I think he's been sending bills to Uncle Sam for years, trying to collect rent for the space the moon lander was on.

I think the article was poking fun. But it sounds like a great idea... Looking to the future!

I'd start with a read of the 1967 Treaty on the Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, Including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. I'm sure it's fascinating reading - most UN documents are .

Might I suggest you start marketing these great "moon units" to the people already investing in cryogenics!!! They plan on being around a while!

  • NancyChadwick10th December, 2003

    And last but not least....
Who's the current owner from whom you would purchase the Moon (or a portion thereof)? I can see the agreement of sale now...God the grantor

  • scott_mn10th December, 2003

BethE in a sad way that is almost a the perfect idea.

Once you wake up you will be in the confines of your moon unit.

Time for me go and check out the doc recommended above.

  • ahabion11th December, 2003

not to mention that the moon is in outer space... DUH!!! well what else is in Outer space??? hrm....

something called COMETS that btw smash into the moon daily hence creating the craters in it... so i guess you'd have to have COMETs (come over my extra-terrestrials) insurance. If you live from the impact... you better be tied or anchored onto something on the moon cuase once that meteor hits... there is no gravity... so OFF you go into null space with the same velocity that when the meteor hit the moon, hence sending you off into another direction... then from there you suffacate when your oxygen depletes and then your insides collaspes when your suit gets penetrated and you collaspes within yourself....

that would be interesting to see but i really wouldnt want to live there... the theory is there, but hey, i'll wait for the United Federation of Planets to form the Defcon 5 defense grid... i think i'll live that long... i'm only 22... LOL

happy investing and say Hi to Marvin for me!!!

Comets? Earth gets lots of the same impacts. It just has wind and waves and rain and foliage to hide most of 'em over time. And the atmosphere gets rid of some of the smaller ones, either by incinerating or deflecting them.

As for real estate on the moon, I believe the aforementioned UN document as well as various treaties keep any country from staking claims right now ... which would preclude individuals from those signing countries (including ours) from doing so. I'm sure one day there will be an "orderly" process for doling out territories ... involving large campaign contributions (and their equivalents in other nations) no doubt.

Corporate and Offshore? Well, any country that allows spaceflight from its territories also is on the hook for any damages they cause anywhere else, which basically keeps the riff-raff out of the space business (although this is, I believe, in the process of being relaxed to try to help space tourism along).

I think you guys overlooked something, when and if you foreclose on someone, what sheriff is going to go knock on the door? I think the moon is out of mostly all the departments jurisdiction.

and as far as the UN rules go, I would just claim residence in another country that's not part of the UN. I'm not going to be regulated by a bunch of guys and gals that sit around and make up rules about the moon. Come on now, If we can get around this Due On Sale crap, the UN regulating moon real estate is not going to stop me.

The only thing I would dislike about living on the moon...No ocean front properties.

I think it's in the same treaty (the 1967 Treaty on the Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space) that it says that no COUNTRY can stake ownership in the moond (It says nothing of individuals).

You eluded to this, but companies are already doing this. You get a deed and everything. Would it hold up when push came to shove....I highly doubt it. Others are selling stars or selling the names of stars (so you can name it after your Valentine, or whatever).

My claim of title to certain portions of land on the moon (not all of it, as was erroniously posted) was indeed granted by the UN. However, I have indeed not been successful in getting payments from the US government for their use of my land. I was going to evict them, but they stopped using it. The legal proceedings were too much for me.

I am the motivated seller you are all looking for. I will consider options, LO etc. I am real desperate on this one, the mortgage is killing me (I owe some UN staffers a ton).

If i had only done my due diligence I would have discovered the moon is not made out of cheese, and would never have adopted a dairy export exit strategy.

    MrMike

The problem with Sub2 is that I would still have the loan. Once the person who had bought the moon land from me realised what a stupid idea it was they would just walk. Maybe I could look at suing the property inspector.

Anyway, foreclosure notice arrived today. Ohhh, if only I hadn't used a second on our castle in Germany to make up the down payment.
