No BR Doors

I was asked this question by a friend last night. Is it illegal for a rental house to have no bedroom doors? I could not think of any reason it would be illegal, but I thought I would check here.

If there is not a door, then it is not considered a bedroom. I had a 2/2 with a "study" that we converted into a 3/2 by adding a door (it already had a closet.) Bumped the rent up a few hundred dollars per month. The room must also have an egress (window) to be a bedroom. In addition, various housing authorities have other requirements for latching, locks, etc.

So, it cannot be called a bedroom with no door? What should the people living there do?

This is apropos in an election year. The "open door" policy.

If the intent is to use this room as a bedroom, then a door (as well as other requirements-see the above post) has to be installed. If someone uses the dining room or kitchen as their bedroom- then this generally violates the permitted use within a good lease agreement.

There is the spirit of the law and there is the letter of the law.......simply taking off a door does not negate definition of what a bedroom is or is not.

Bedrooms by code is defined as a room designated for sleeping which has both window and door egress as well as a closet depending on the year it was built.

I have built in about 6 different counties in North Carolina and have had this topic come up with several building inspectors that determined a bonus room could be deemed a bedroom......with or without a door.

I actually have a room in my house that meets this qualification.........no door but it does have egress and a closet.

    regards
