How do I find an attourny who can help me break my lease? My complex has become the ghetto... we've made the news twice about apartment break-ins, my car has been broken into and my computer ($900 part) stolen, there's garbage everywhere, people let their children run loose in the street at night, we've just recieved another letter stating that a car has just been stolen and I have pictures of what a rat's nest this has become. Where do I find help?????

Each tenancy must meet minimum housing standards set forth in statute. I would determine whether you may have an "out" based on any potential noncompliance by your landlord with these standards.

Otherwise, I don't believe that a "change in the neighborhood" would be a basis to get out of the lease. Your state may have a different law regarding this (which I doubt) but you may want to check to be sure.

Have you tried talking to your landlord about whether he would be willing to let you out of the lease, if, perhaps you were willing to pay to re-advertise the place? It may be worth asking.

    AM2250,

If YOUR rental unit is unsafe (provable) I think you CAN break YourLease...

    BUT..

    ....be prepared to lose YourSecurityDeposit....

....although, I DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD...

    IMHO...

Sounds to me that if your apartment has been broken into that sounds unsafe to me!

at the most you could lose your deposit but i would go into the rental office and demand they cancal my lease espically if your a long term tenant.
