I live in LA
go to a few foreclosure auctions, the guys running the auctions usually have a website or publish a list of upcoming foreclosures.

In LA you should buy lists from a company known as County Records Research dotcom. They cover ALL 4 zones in LA for $89 a zone for a daily list.
You can view samples of their data. Once you join (I suggest 1 Zone to begin) you can look at their DAILY foreclosure NTS/NOD lists. If you DONT buy their CRR pro program right off the bat, they'll offer it to you via email if you promise to join for 3 months or more. Then they'll snail mail you the program. Then you're in biz.
Add in some comps/title profiles and maybe MLS access and you have enough to get going, and at least be able to follow the big boys. Don't bid until you've spent more time on the basics though.
UNFORTUNATELY most of the "foreclosure" websites are reselling OLD data of REO's that are for sale at retail prices. Bummer. The reality is that to get good LA County data, you gotta pay for it. Don't buy into a generic website.
Also checkout Countrywide's foreclosure site for California, CTCRES dotcom. It's relatively up to date, you can check it daily and weekly and also call their 800# to play monopoly (see my recent article on this subject). Hope this helps all LA area newbies.
Find the bank's foreclosure listing site, not some compiler's site, use their 800#'s, do some homework, buy the data if you can afford it.

Walk into your local bank an ask for a list of the REOs they have available.
They will either send you to a specific department or give a you a contact number of who to contact about them.
Keep in mind like has been already mentioned that a lot of REOs are being listed for full value.
There will probably be only a few or maybe no deals at all on the list.
However, keep that list with you. Situations can change. The banks don't want to keep properties. They can become motivated sellers too.
