Private Messages

Joel,

It seems to me that the current method of deleting old Private messages is a little problematic. If somebody sends me a PM on the 30'th of the month and I don't log in until the 2nd of the following month does that PM get deleted?

Would it take a lot more storage space to delete PM's through the 25th or 20th of each month and pick up the others the next month?

From what I remember about our clean up script is that it only deletes read messages from the last month. And unread messages from two months ago.

Since we send out a Wednesday reminder email about the private messages, the user should have been emailed 4 times before we delete that message.

We didn't want to get into becoming an email service on the site. I think next year we might expand upon this. The primary purpose why I started TCI with Private Messaging was to get rid of people trying to spam everybody else.

I think we should create a poll and see if we should remove PM'ing now that mostly everybody has spam filters.

I think getting rid of PM's and letting everybody get their messages via e-mail is a good idea. The problem now, of course, is that many people don't provide an e-mail link and some people are not subscribers. So you effectively have no way to reach them. I agree, the duplicative system is pointless. I'd rather use e-mail anyway.

Problem, the only real advantage of the rookie level subscription is access to PM's. What does that do to that subscription level?

They see the residential properties one week before the non-paying subscriber. They also receive file storage space for their properties. And the properties they list automatically get shown to non-paying members.
