Update for Runway 5R-23L January 18th 2023
Runway 5R-23L, the main runway at the Airport, reopened for its full length this afternoon after being closed for completion of the current runway rehabilitation project. As a result, much of the aircraft traffic that had been diverted from Runway 5R-23L should resume using it. The reopening of Runway 5R-23L had been held up by the need for some final rehabilitation work, which involves earthwork that could not be done over the past several weeks due to the persistent rain that we have experienced. The Airport Authority was able to put a temporary measure in place to postpone the work until later, when we have a long enough period of dry weather for the final work to be done. This measure avoided the need to keep the runway closed until then.
When weather permits the final work to be done, there will be temporary closures of the runway but it can remain open in the meantime. Also as we mentioned in our previous update, the FAA is still working on instrument approach equipment for the runway. The FAA should have the instruments in operation in the near future. Until then, aircraft making instrument approaches will continue to use the parallel runway, but departures will not be affected.
