Wood Foundations?? (not Concrete)

myfrogger profile photo

First of all I am in Iowa. There is a local builder that has been building homes with a wood foundation. They cost more than concrete and some layman as well as professional folks told me they perfer the wood foundation! They claim it is better than concrete but I just don't see how....

Anyone able to give their experiences?

I had some exposure to a builder
    who used wood foundations.

The advantage is it's cheaper, faster, and easier to use than pouring a concrete foundation.

The brochure material claimed that they have a long life (200+ years) once the posts have been properly treated. That's the claim, I don't know how it can be substantiated. During the 30 years that
I knew this builder, I never heard of a
    foundation failure.

The homes were all at the low (lowest) entry level of affordable housing. The subdivisons were filled with "credit challanged buyers" and these subdivisions, while profitable to the builder, were stigmatized by the economic status of the owners and
to a lesser extent the use of wood foundations..
