Steel Homes - Anyone With Experience

nmcurse profile photo

I recently started aquiring vacant land through tax sales and wanted to do more....

I looked into steel homes mainly because I found them cheap and I would be able to do the inside..

Anyone have experience with this or comments and suggestions? :-?

Post back or PM if you end up doing this.

I have been looking into "panelized" construction. Pretty interesting.

Well I'm trying to get more info on how much it will cost (approx) to put the slab and piping down. I can't imagine that much ...but I'm a newbie.. I think it can be huge. I know the insides on these steel homes come empty but I plan on getting the 900sqft and making a huge studio apartment.

You'd be amazed what concrete and foot work costs.

There are several construction estimating s'ware packages that are index by zip, so they are fairly accurate.

I found the doing google search.

    You sould say

    20x40 6" slab w/ blah rebar
    120' x 6" x 42" footing

and then it would calc the cost.

You might just want to chat w/ some GCs in the area and get a feel for the spread.

Here it seems to run 100/sq ft for production construction to ~200 for a really nice custom place.

Good like. In certain markets, that can be a very profitable way to go.

While researching leach fields, I came across this:

    Looked quite informative.

We looked at metal fourplexes from heritage metal buildings, and it worked out about 30% cheaper to build stick framed houses using panelized components.

I would like to know the benefits of steel frame other than the modest time savings, if you are familiar with them. I live in a cold area, and insulation is supposed to be better in stick framed construction due to marginal heat loss via conductivity through the metal. :-?
