Possible To Have 2 Dwellings On One Property?

sbc profile photo

I have a family member that lives in a very, very old house that is at a point of no longer being "fixable". Anyhow, this person is very stubborn and refuses to move, making very difficult to find a resolve to the problem. I've tossed up the idea of having a manufactored house or "from the ground up construction" built behind the main home. Is this possible? What are the necessary steps to find out how to make this work. The location in questions is Nash County, NC.

Thank You

I suggest you check to determine what the current zoning of the property is. The zoning ordinance will specify, for instance, what additional buildings may be constructed on the same property. For instance, it will define accessory uses and accessory buildings. Maybe the existing or new structure could qualify as an accessory building, not requiring you to subdivide the property. The zoning is the key.

Go to the county court house and see if you have to pull a permit to build a house. I know in many rural counties here in Alabama you only have to get the septic system permitted and inspected.

Zoning is right but even if the zoning says no you may be able to go to the zoning board of appeals and get a waiver as long as you agree to tear down the old house either when the new one is finished or the stubborn relative no longer occupies it.
