House Under Contract - Disclosure Statement

I currently have a house under contact. The contact price is at fair market value. The disclosure statement indicates that the oil furnace is 3 years old and the cental air conditioning is 1 and a half years old. After having my home inspector look at the house it turns out the the age of the furnace is correct, but the air conditioning is the original estimated to be 27 years old. (Yes the outside unit looked older than 1 1/2 when I placed, my bid but I did want the house for location and the numbers work for me even if I do ultimately have to replace it myself).

The home inspector also found a few things that the seller needs to repair, based and the repair clause.

My question is this... How should I or could I negotiate some compensation for the airconditioner? I don't really want to walk away from this deal and I think that the seller may be under contract to purchase a new home to live in.

Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.
Thanks.

Given the time of year that the inspection took place, is it fair to say that your inspector did not turn on the central air? If so, then nobody knows if the system will be operational come the summer. Maybe (and I stress "maybe"wink the approach should be to advise the seller of your inspector's findings on the age of the AC compressor and explore if the seller is willing to credit you or at least escrow an amount to cover some or all of replacement cost, or if this is an option, for the seller to purchase some home warranty covering the AC.
