Employment Verification - App. Question

Hey,

Great forum. Rookie property manager here with a basic "What do you do?"question.

When evaluating a rental application, I check credit, criminal convictions and evictions for the state of application, verbal verify of current employement and verbal verify of past rental history.

How detailed can I get with asking employment verify? Is it wrong to request a W-2 and ask the employment manager what the prospect for future emplyment is?
