Self-Directed IRA - Who Do You Use

team_co_op profile photo

I am currently using Mid Ohio who I think have an office full of monkeys doing the work. Maybe I am being too harsh on the monkeys. Anyway I was looking for some advice from those in the know to see who the hot IRA firm is for administrative a self directed IRA for my investing in TLC's. Thanks for the input.[ Edited by team_co_op on Date 01/29/2004 ]

I have used Pensco. Alittle pricey but have had great experience with them.

My problems have been in reference to:
-Difficulty in reaching someone to talk to about opening an account. Three phone calls with no call backs. (Should have been my first indication of lousy customer service)
-Lost tax sale certificates. After six phone calls, I was able to get two of my four promised call backs. Fortunatley, I was able to get duplicates made at the courthouse, but at my expense.
-I requested an overnight cashiers check be sent to the courthouse. Based on the fact that all but one transaction had been screwed up I called to verify they recieved the fax and the check would be sent the next day. The fax was recieved and the check would be sent the next day. Of course the check came three days later which dropped my credibility with treasurers office. (This was the first time they let a payment be made after the auction.)
-Rolled over an IRA. One person who was handling the transfer just quit working on it with no warning. Call backs were never recieved. After six weeks of no indication the transfer had taken place I called and no record of my request was on file.

The main problems are the lack of customer service, organization and just a general attitude of not caring. I do not feel that I should have to check up after every transaction to see if they did their job. I have also made several attempts to have someone give an expanation of why all but one of my transactions had not been screwed up but, what a suprise no response. It is disappointing after some of the good reviews I had heard. Maybe I am just the exception. Hopefully with more complaining someone from Mid Ohio will read this and maybe I will finally get a response. <IMG SRC="images/forum/smilies/icon_wink.gif"> [ Edited by team_co_op on Date 01/30/2004 ]

I know what you mean about the smooth cool brushoff, when I first started trying to find out information, but once I got my account established, I now have an access that they dont give out until you get an account open. LOL, I now get through on the first couple of rings. Be patient and if you use them, things will get much better. Also, ask to speak to a manager, and go up the chain until you get some satisfaction. We do pay good money for the servies and we should be sure to get the best possible service available, or we'll be forced to move our money!
Good luck[ Edited by pejames on Date 01/31/2004 ]
