Tax WRITEOFF On Rental Home

dlopez profile photo

My permanent home is in California but I've lived this past year in NY, renting an apt. The reason I relocated is work- related. I still have the place in CA, for which I pay. All my bank accounts and insurance are still in CA also.
My question is:

Can I get a tax writeoff for the NY apt. on the grounds that the job was in NY?
thanks

You need to speak with a tax advisor.

My first question to you would be; was it a relocation or a temporary assignment. As a consultant, when I take a gig in another state I do not relocate. My primary residence is still in my home state. The temporary living arrangements are an expense that I write-off.

    Your situation may be different.

    Short answer: NO

Rent you pay is a personal housing expense and not deductible.
