Rehab?- Toilets And Replumbing

dfund profile photo

I'm considering purchasing a house that needs a lot of work. I'm not too concerned about most of it however it was a rental before it was foreclosed on and the renters clogged the (3) toilets with dirt. How worried should I be about this? How much damage could be done because of it? The house has been empty for over a year.

When a 2 story house is replumbed, do they have to remove a lot of drywall to re-pipe the downstairs?

Thanks

Do you know that the entire thing needs replumbed? I would ask for a plumbing inspection when you submit the offer. Also is it hooked up to city sewer or does it have a septic tank?

There are other plumbing issues which I did not mention. I'm sure it need to be replumb but the toilet issue still boths me. It's hooked up to city sewer.

    Thanks for your help!

First off if the renters stopped up the toilets with just dirt a good plumber will be able to fix this for you without tearing out any plumbing.

If however the drain lines really need to be replaced you should expect much more than just a few open walls. There are usually T's and runs going through joists that connect to main lines, it could be very expensive and quite invasive.

I would spend my time trying to get the lines open first and going the replacement route as only a last resort.
