Paint Sprayers

bigbear profile photo

I'm looking at buying some properties for either resell or rental. Since I am trying to target houses that sell cheaper because they need some cleaning up, I KNOW every place I purchase will need to be painted. Inside is mandatory, and outside is probable.

Right now I have more time than money and I don't mind painting. I am thinking seriously about buying a paint sprayer to make these jobs quicker and more efficient. I don't really want to go over the $250 range at this time, and I know for this price I can't get anything of a professional quality. Does anyone have any advice on a type or brand of sprayer that I can use indoors and outdoors in my price range? Not sure if I should buy a compressor type where I could use the compressor for other tools also, or just buy a stand alone sprayer.

Thanks for your help.

At that price range you would be looking at a good used sprayer or 2 1/2 wagner power sprayers, which would be about how many you would go through in 2 1/2 houses, since they are junk.

Look for a good used unit or save up for the new one.

Titan makes a great sprayer for $959.00 Sherwin Williams carries them, I knowit is more than you want to spent but it will handle all your needs interior and exterior. It is an airless but once you get the hang of it you won't use anything else. Trust me I'm a painter for 15 years.

Have painted professionally and my own properties. have bought several sprayers over the years and have never purchased new one. My 2 favorite place to buy . Pawn shops and tool rental places. NOT Compressor type. You want an airless sprayer with about 25 to 50 foot of hose. Bought 2 last year at a pawn shop they were priced at 259 and 225. I offered 300 for both and they accepted .. they have worked great and have more than saved 300 on the last cond i bought and painted. Have fun

You can also rent a sprayer from Home Depot for @ $45 an hour and $120 for the day.

    Hey,

The first place I now look for used tools is EBAY. It takes about 10 seconds to do a search. I only look in my area (so I can drive and pick the stuff up).

I'm with JFLICK on this one. I just bought a new Titan for about a grand. It kicks butt! My last sprayer was a Home Depot airless that cost me $400. It was a diaphram type. It was OK for a while. The diaphrams kept failing on me right in the middle of a job. I had to toss the actual spray gun and get a pro quality gun for about $100. That made it way better. I had the set up for about twenty five jobs. This new airless is a piston pump and using it is night and day better in every way. It is easy to clean, puts out a lot of paint for exteriors and if I change the gun or spray tips I can spray enamel on interior trim and doors like magic. It is easier to adjust the paint volume/pressure... you can't do that with cheap rigs. I wish that I would have spent the bucks in the first place. It would have been worth it just to avoid the aggravation of working with junk tools and not getting good results for the effort.

Hitting pawn shops for sprayers is a good idea. If you can get a name brand rig for cheap, you can always order replacement parts or have it rebuilt. In the end you have a pro tool that you can sell for what you paid for it. You won't be frustrated doing a crummy job and working too hard to do it with a cheap unit.

I must disagree with most of the previous posters. I don't like the idea of used spray equipment. Idiots leave water in them and they rust causeing all sorts of problems from plugged-up lines to seized pistons, to orange chunks in your nice fresh paint (unless they're the super expensive stainless models). People also like to store them in the garage where the water freezes and causes all sorts of other horrible things to happen. I've used all sorts of sprayers for years in my profession, and when I needed one a few years ago, I went to Home Depot and bought a Graco airless for a few hundred bucks. Works just fine. Be sure to leave mineral spirits or that pricey fluid they sell for storing the pump during down time. I guess you could find good used stuff, but I'd rather have the warranty. Get the 50 ft hose. Z

I like the idea of a new unit also. Especially when you can get a great deal on them. I purchased mine last year from gleempaint.com. They have both reconditioned and new sprayers. Their prices were even lower than what I saw used ones going for on ebay. I've ordered other painting accessories from them also and they always give quick service with excellent customer support.

Home Depot usually has slightly used equipment. I picked up a pressure washer and very nice paint sprayer for a little more than half price!

It was their $600 model that had been used a few times and had some dried paint on it. They had it marked $450 and I asked for the manager. I offered her $350. She checked her cost and said it was about 475....but then said "okay". I got it home, did a little cleaning and used it to paint a house. MAN IS IT NICE.

The managers usually will take a reasonable offer. I have had my pressure washer for many years, and it runs great. My wife said I never buy anything unless it is a bargain...hmmmm. She may be onto something.
