Call a couple of HVAC companies and ask what they include in their basic service and compare. In my experience for my AC unit, it was to clean the flters, check for coolant leaks, fill the coolant if necesary, check the wiring for loose or bad wires. The tech usually ran it through a couple cycles to make sure it was putting out cold air. Not much else. I lived in Arizona for almost 30 years and AC is mandatory to make it through the summer.
Chris, You can go to one the supply stores, ie Home Depot or Lowes and pickup some of the recreational vehicle antifreeze. This is what they use to prevent pipes from freezing and cracking. It will for your application as well.
So, blowing out the pipes with compressed air seems to be the consensus. And antifreeze in the drains to protect the traps- makes sense.
Thanks happyhome for the link- very informative. The consensus there seems to be that it is almost criminal to let a house freeze in the first place. The information on water in appliances was interesting.
Around here there are lots of bank owned properties that have notices saying they have been winterized- do not use plumbing. I have wondered what that entailed- now I think I know.
