For older homes this is typical, however when the cracks actually break the bricks themselves as well as extending down to the foundations, then you have a foundation (footer) issue which needs to be addressed by a professional.
cracks can be caused from the homes foundation "settleing" or "sinking". it can be repair by digging out at the sinking area and drinking wedges under the f/d and "slowly" raising the brick {if the gap is not to large} once they are raise to where they once again match pour concrete around the wedges..ggod luck.kenmax
It is due to one thing only - movement.
It is up to you to see what and how much and more importantly if the movement has stopped or is on-going or seasonal.
Bricks can be easily repointed if the problem has been fixed.
Sometimes the fix could be as easy as installing gutters on the roof nearby to get the water away from the house.

Check to see if there are any trees growing nearby, it could be the roots. (this happened on one of my properties) 8-)
