A/C Window Unit Dilemma

d_random profile photo

I have installed some a/c window units, no problem there. The problem is that there is now a gap on the sides of the unit (picture below) that exposes the window sill wood to the elements. Also, the window unit fit in the window is not the most airtight and it creates quite a draft. I even found a bird that had a nest and eggs in the back window last week!

I have looked on the internet for days for some product that might provides a more weather proof resistance, to fit around the exterior of the unit in this exposed area. No such luck. I would be up for making something, but I have no idea where to start? Any ideas?

Constructing a wood frame out of plywood is the only easy thing I can think of for your situation.

Thanks for the suggestion finniganps. What would you use for insulation (behind the wood frame)?

cut up sheets of styrofoam to fit. and use silicone to seal or expanding foam to seal. you can paint the styro white. dont use spray paint tho.

You could also find some heave duty spray foam. I have this foam in a can spray that I got from Home Depot that would work perfectly for your situation.

Thanks ! Are you saying cut a large piece of plywood and cut a hole for the a/c and slide it around it? So, how would I be able to mount the plywood to the window and a/c unit? Would it fall off?
