Hi i have a rather odd question that I hope someone can help me with. I have a person that I have been discussng my real estate ventures with and he is teling me that some law prevents me from privately selling a house that isn't my primary residence. He is saying that I have to use a real estate agent. anyone know anything about this? Fact or fiction?

Thanks

    Hello,
You don't have to use a real estate agent. If you know what you are doing you can sell the house yourself. It might take more time and effort than it is worth though. The safe way to sell a home is by using a real estate agent. You might want to call several(5 or 6) and let them know you are shopping around. Go with your instincts and also try to find the best price. Some real estate agents might charge at least 3 percent. If you can find one that will sell for a few thousand dollars instead of a percenatge if that would be cheaper that might be the way to go. Please be advised that I am not an agent and just make sure you have all your bases covered. Good luck!

Never heard of any such law--certainly not in PA. I suggest you ask this person for the name and citation of the statute. It'll be interesting to see if he can come up with it.

Thanks for the responses I thought that it was kind of odd. I mean I know if you sell more than a certain amount of cars a year you have to get a dealrs liscence but I never heard of such a thing with real estate.

    Thanks

I suspect he was thinking of the licensing law that prohibits one from selling a property for the benefit of others without a real estate license. This, however, does not apply to owners of the property. If you own it you can sell it. If you don't own it, you cannot sell it for someone else without a license...legally!

Ah I didn't know that! Thanks! That is probably what he is thinking of
