Credit Report And Collection Agency

This is for those of you that know more than I do ( which is most of you.

My situation: A couple of years ago, my wife had surgery and was uninsured. This resulted in a bill of $17000. The hospital turned it over to a collection agency and since then I have been paying $100/month. Well it just turned up on my credit report.

I dont remember signing anything that said I would guarantee this bill and since my wife was the patient, shouldnt it be on her report and not mine?

I need suggestions on what to do to get this removed.

Thanks in advance, wgccomp

The only thing to do is pay it off. Any loan will show on your report along with the monthly payment. I expect that is what you are seeing..that is not bad. It's just another monthly expense that any creditor would take into account when figuring your debt-to-income.
If this entry shows as a delinquent account, that will be a mark against you.

You don't want collection agency TLs on your report no matter how they're appearing ... anyone scrutinizing the report knows the difference between a CA and a CC, installment loan, mortgage, etc.

If the husband isn't responsible for the wife's bills in your state (you need to check), the CA has no grounds to be reporting to the CRAs about you, unless you signed something. Your continued payment, or decision to omit it if you're not made happy, then provides practical if not legal leverage to get them to remove the TL.

If you are responsible for the wife's debts, that approach may not be entirely out the window ... you'll have to tread lightly but you may be able to get to the same result without things becoming too acrimonious.
