Hi there,

Just wondering...this local REI club in town offers mentoring program. I have a suspicion that it's a birddogging program in disguise....what do you think?

Should local REI clubs be charging fees? Do you know of any good REI clubs in LA or Boston areas? Thank you.

    Cynthia48,

I am doing a little due diligence on this club for you, so I will have an answer shortly.

this is an actual monthly meeting session. the person who runs the group, does have a program where you may act as a bird dog if you wish. i have been a member of the overall group for at least the past 3.5 years. i am now further away and do not attend meetings as regularly, plus now a lot of the speaker topics are repeats for me.

i would like to suggest bringing any info you have regarding properties/items for sale or services to be put out on the tables supplied by 6:15/ 6:30. if you are looking for a more instructional group i would like to suggest the Orange County meetings. good luck.

    Cynthia48,

I just checked with Bill Bronchick, his mom runs this club in Los Angelos. Bill however has no direct involvement with the club.

Can you network with other investors in these clubs the answer is Yes. Should the REI Club charge a fee, I would think if they do it should be minimul.

My reasoning is they do get you there to sell you something, how much you will learn from their speakers is questionable. If I every did attend a REI club it would be for the interaction with other investors who are there to help not offer you there personal and private mentoring system.

I had a very intelligent and astute young lady from Arizona in my last workshop in Las Vegas, she summed it up very well, in the previous paid for seminar she went to they told her 50 ways she could invest creatively, however they never once told her how to do it.

My personal view is that a Bird Dog can find all the investors they need right out of the newpaper. Howerver, if the club fees are reasonable then tell the investors there what you do when you attend.

If some of the members tell you they will mentor you for a fee, tell them you will give them some select properties for a fee. These type of people who want to mentor you are discussion board and REI club 'hustlers', just don't fall for it.

When I see it happening here on TCI and it does, they get the delete button. So this board is Free and you get more information than possibly any club can offer.

Thanks. It makes sense that I don't need anyone charging me...however, am I competent to do all this myself for the first time with perhaps just your birddogging course John?

Moreover, I didn't quite get the 6:15/6:30 reference. Could you please elaborate on that? What are the clubs or programs do you recommend for someone out in LA? How difficult is it to make it as a REI out here when lots of people are in the RE market?

I've posted this on another thread:

I am just starting and well...lost. I have not completed the Carlton Sheets program but plan to in the next few weeks. I want to live the REI dream---no boss and all. However, I don't know what to do exactly. As a graduate student, I will have my summer off to dive fully into REI. I have some startup money stored and have good credit. How can I make the most out of my time this summer?

    1) what other books or courses should I take to learn more?

    2) once I have some grasp of the material...what do I do next? Do I look for a mentor or work somewhere to get more insider knowledge? OR, do I just focus on developing networks---which networks

    3) Is the competitive environment of LA or Boston area even doable for a beginner?

    4) Will this business really be lucrative or planning for law school be wiser?
