    To find out if/what taxes are owned (and when new ones are due) contact the county treasurer.

    The country recorders office can provide you info on who the listed owner, mortgage companies and lien holders are.

    These are not fool-proof however (over 90+% accurate), and there may be others who have claim to the title. The only 100% sure way I know of is to pay for a title search.
