Well I'm still a newbie when it comes to REI however there are several ways you could go about it. If you really wanted to start out without any risk you can begin as a birddog and learn the ropes while make some money on the side. Flipping is your next option as far low risk. Sub 2 is something anyone can do if they put the time into it. John Locke has a great course on here and I have heard no complaints from anyone about it not being worth the money.
It's really just up to you on how much risk you want to take on in the beginning. But there are several ways to go about it. Most of all you just need to get started.
