What Should I Put On The Stairs? Carpet?

SmileyFace profile photo

I am having laminate floor (wood) installed in my 2nd home. 1600 sf out of 1800sf will be covered by the laminate. We have two sets of stairs. We wanted to have laminate on the stairs as well, but it is just too expensive to do it. ($30 installation per step and $7.25 materials per step). Is there any other alternative other than laying down the carpet? I just hate carpet due to my severe allegies. Do you have any suggestions? :-?

Allergies? To the dirt in Carpet, or the chemical outgassing?

If it's the dirt, try a carpet runner. They usually are very low pile, and can be quite decorative.

You may find the economics of anything but paint are similar to the laminate on the stairs, however.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wish I could stain or paint the steps, but I could not. They are particleboards. If we have to install wood, how expensive is it? Do you know?
