What Constitutes A Closet?

4arunner profile photo

i have a house with a large bonus room that we would like to add a closet to so we can advertise it as a 4 bedroom house when we sell. We do not want to frame one in. I was hoping to buy a unit of some sort and attach it to the wall and put molding around it to make it look permanent.

Closetmaid has some units we like, but the do not have doors. If this is a state requirement, we live in north carolina.[ Edited by 4arunner on Date 03/11/2005 ]

I think deep down, you already know the answer to this question. Obviously, an open casework unit screwed to the wall would not constitute a closet and subsequently a bedroom. Otherwise, you could simply remove the doors from the medicine cabinet in the powder room and call it a 5th bedroom.
More importantly, where is this bonus room located? Is there a window in the room that qualifies as an egress? In Pa. these factors are what is needed in order to classify a room as bedroom.

What does the builder call it? I can only speak for florida but I have seen bedrooms without closets. A house I just sold in my opinion was a 2/2 with den but we sold it as a 3 bedroom cause that is what the blueprints said. It was a small room no closet and double doors.

In North Carolina there is not a minimum size per se, however to be a bonafide closet it would have to be enclosed by walls and a door.

If you are on a septic system............then you have to make sure that your such has been designed and able to perk for the addtional bedroom.

Just out of curiosity, why are you adverse to the idea of framing in a closet, but willing to buy a prefab unit and screw it into the walls?
