Thermostat Question

hmnr profile photo

I have a house rental in which we usually have nothing to do with the thermostat since the tenants pay their own heat. this year we rented the house to a Somalian Refugee family. All has gone well ecept that the furnace keeps going out. When we go to relight the pilot we find that the thermostat is usually set for about 80 degrees. I am wondering if they have the heat too high and this is why it keeps going out. I trying to do some looking on the internet to find out if there are any thermostats that I can lock out the highest temperature at about 75 degrees but could find anything like this. Anyone have any info on something like this or other ideas? Thanks.

    Hello,
I do not know what kind of furnace you have but there are several reasons that your pilot light might go out.

    1. It could be your thermocouple needs replaced.
    2. You could have a small leak in one of your heat exchangers. When the fan comes on it blows out the pilot. If this is the case a new furnace is in order. I just had this issue in one of mine.
    3. You might be getting some back draft from the chimney. Requires a clean or new chimney cap.
    4. Your gas valve might need replaced.
    5. Your pilot orifice might be clogged. Take it apart and clean.

You might what to call in a pro. It most likely is not a thermostat issue.

    Good luck.
