my first rentall has metal kitchen cabinets. instead of regular shelf paper, there is contact paper that has seen it's better days. any suggestions other than putting new contact paper on top of the old.

Go to your local hardware store and ask for a solvent that will remove this. I know alcohol can remove the residue from labels, so I imagine there are other things that will remove the glue from contact paper.
Sounds like you got a cool house. I wonder if you could set it up all retro like?
I don't have first-hand experience here , but I'm guessing that the adhesive is similar in nature to the adhesive used on a variety of stickers and decals. So, I have some suggestions you might try.
First, just try a hair dryer and see if heat will soften the adhesive enough to remove the paper.
Second, wet an old towel and place on the paper. Use a standard iron to inject heat and steam through the towel into the paper to see if that will soften it up for removal.
Third, if I'm right about the adhesive quality, then a solvent like Toluene may work. Cut criss-cross lines through the paper with a razor blade (careful :-o), then saturate a small area with a product like Goof Off. After 1 to 2 minutes attempt to scrape up the paper.
If any of these ideas work, post here so we'll know for sure and can give better advise next time.
thanks all - I've decided to remove them and put in wood cabinets - kitchen will present a much cleaner first appearance - looks like another week before my sign goes out front
Belatedly I would suggest spraying them if they are in good working condition and decent shape. Actually those cabinets are now quite popular, There are several techniques and finishes that would leave those cabinets looking like new...
About 15 years ago when I first moved into my present house I painted my metal cabinets but cant remember what type of paint I used.
We are currently doing some rehab work on a rental we bought and it has metal cabinets I would like to keep. Can someone tell me what type of paint to get.
