Knob And Tube Wiring- Ok?

TracyH profile photo

I've been reading various books and checking the NEC, but I'm still not sure about this. If you buy a building with existing knob and tube wiring, does it have to be updated? Or can you leave the wiring as is, which, among other things, seems to mean that your outlets and switches will be ungrounded.

Thanks for any help on this,

Tracy

In Florida, it would be very hard if not impossible to find new insurance for knob and tube. They always ask if there are breakers.

    Hi bgrossnickle,

That's interesting. Maybe it's a regional thing? I know a few owners with knob and tube wiring in their buildings and they have coverage. Perhaps getting a new policy written, though, would be more difficult.

    Thanks for the reply,

    Tracy
