HW Floors On Joists, No Sub Floor

swolsen profile photo

I am looking at a 95 yr old house that has all hardwood floors right on the floor joists. There is no sub flooring under that. Can anyone tell me if this is acceptable building code?. If it is not to code can I just install new flooring on top of original HW or do I need to remove it and install a sub floor? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

In the old days they laid a 3" pine floor over the joists... I have seen many people refinish it with out issue... Pine has a tendency to blotch when staining so keep it natural....

If you do lay a floor on top which you can do... You best result would be to lay diagonally to the existing floor...

Because you’re going to use a nail down material use a slip-sheet between the two floors and it will reduce the noise from friction...

If the foundation is a crawl then insulate and install a vapor barrier on the ground to keep as much moisture out as possible.................if a basement then again, try to keep the moisture / humidity down and your floor will be fine.
