How Do I Repair A Cigarette Burn In A Refrigerator?

linlin profile photo

When we did the final walkthrough with a tenant who is moving we noticed a very large cigarette burn in the refrigerator on the bottom inside.

I checked Lowes but they had no idea on what could repair it. I was wondering if the stuff to repair say a fiberglass boar hull could be used.

The renter said her husband dropped his cogarette and forgot to pick it upbefore he closed the refrigerator.

Gel coat is what the final layer on a fiberglass boat hull is called. I suspect it would work well if the color matched, but it is fairly expensive and usually comes in large quantity, while you only need a gram or two...

They do sell gel coat at Home Depot. I do not think it would work for your problem, but you could certainly try. I know they sell it in an aerosol can and I think a compound too (I bought the can).

We have found an appliance place that sell parts to the refrigerators that we buy. Most of the parts that break are the handles.

You might be able to get a replacement part rather than trying to fix it.

The replacement for the lower panel is $425. That is the cost of a low end fridge.

Your tenant did pay for the damage right?

We are still settling the security issue as I did not want to charge them for a whole panel if it would be repaired but I am fed up with calling around so I think I will just take out the $425 and have the appliance shop replace the panel. Less headaches and the initial move-in inspection video shows the fridge was brand new.

The fridge in the property was $4K. A $425 fridge would not look good in that kitchen. I thought of moving the fridge to another property and just replacing it but taking the $425 out of the security is a better alternative than spending time shopping, moving out fridge A and getting fridge B moved in.

And who the heck smokes while looking around in the fridge anyway?

    right on koy,
A cheap repair always cost more than it saved you. A 4k fridge, what kind is it. (Viking or Subzero)

I buy all of my appliance parts from www.repairclinic.com I am guessing that they have the part you need to replace the burned one. Replace it and take it out of the deposit.

Take the $425 (cost to repair) out of the security deposit and put it in the bank. Do you think a small cig burn is going to keep someone from renting the property? It obviously does not effect the fridge to cool. Is it that bad? noticeable?

What is a $4000 fridge doing in a rental? I got stainless steel fridge, stove, and dishwasher for $2000 total. If you have a $4000 fridge it must be a million dollar house.

Pay seller for more time and find another lender?

    Jugg,

Visit some of the local supply houses and building material companies............they are one of the best sources.

Once you have a few names in hand............check them against the BBB and of course ask for reference and look at their work.

There was a really good one there about 20 years ago.......but he move to North Carolina. (smile)
