Grandfather Laws

I have let a partner or GC deal with this type thing in the past, but I am now working on a couple of solo rehabs. One in particular will not require the use of a GC b/c of the costs involved which is why I am asking the following general question:
What is normally grandfathered in an existing structure when doing a rehab?
More and more cities are trying to accomodate rehabbers and renovators in regards to various building regulations........however it can vary from city to city.
Basically it will come down to the "safety issue" and how it would effect the owner / public. Without knowing the particulars of your project, its going to be difficult to answer.
I would suggest you contact your local building and zoning code official to get the answer.........they may need to see your plans or visit the project.......but they will be able to tell you what avenue you need to pursue.
