Does That Vinyl Siding Come With Batteries?

aslan profile photo

I found a great house in need of some minor repairs, however the exterior is 3-year-old vinyl siding...

...that is BRIGHT yellow. Like "turn that thing off" yellow.

Is it possible to prime it with Kilz, then paint over it? Is there another/better method?

It's a 2Br/1Ba, abt 700sqft on almost 1acre, zoned RS7 (long narrow lot w/ house nearest street). Asking price $75K, need to paint all interior surfaces, replace vinyl flooring in bath and insulate flooring throughout (has unfinished "basement"...and i use that term loosely). I'm working the numbers right now.

Thanks for your input.

There is spray on vinyl siding in various colors....you may want to look at that.

    Dear Asian,

With great care. The sprayons are OK but depends on the weather. Any chance it might be Asbestos? Are you going to lift the plywood underneath? Or just put new Vinyl down? Any chance to expand on an existing foundation?

Unfinished basement. Did they put in a french drain or anything at time of construction. Run your hand along the walls and flooring is water present. Is there a slope away from the house. Do the mice in the basement appear to be wearing life jackets. With great care. Check the Roaches. When you step on them do you get a nice brittle sound or are they sort of soggy squishy. Means water. Check. Some of the corrections are not that bad, a little pea gravel, a lot of digging a membrane splotched on the side exterior wall of the basement. Etc. Etc. Sounds like fun enjoy.

You could do a spray on vinyl siding but I don't know what you would gain for the extra cost.

I would do as you questioned if you really think the yellow is going to keep buyers away. With high quality paint 2 coats might be enough without the primer, you could do a test area first.

Insulate flooring? Sounds like a waste of money to me unless you plan on living in it yourself.

    Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, I may bag the insulation idea. Part of my vision/mission is raising living conditions in this neighborhood. We'll see.

The yellow is pretty yellow. If it's not too pricy, I may paint, but probably will just give it a bath.

Lucius, the mice have their own coast guard, is that bad? Kidding. There is a good slope down and away from the house...however, some drains will be needed. I could get away with some gravel and fill without too much trouble. basement's in decent condition, just a lot of junk right now. Maybe I'll rent the basement out to the mice if the roaches decline. Also, no, there is no extra foundation to expand on. possiblity of expanding the basement area and building on top, but not sure if i could actually add a usable room upstairs (other than an enclosed porch) because of the floorplan. Might just pass on it altogether.

    Thanks all.
