The furnace or boiler will not light up, only the pilot light lights up.
When i hold the reset button while the pilot light is lit for a minute and then release it, it does not come on.
It is run on gas.
I'm trying to help my father. With his furnice he say's boiler in any case its the one that you have to use the reset button

Sounds like a bad thermocouple to me. If you are not familiar with replacing this inexpensive item - or have no idea what I'm talking about - I highly suggest you call a service technician.
The thermocouple part will be $5 to $25. The service call? whatever the going rate. Explain your problem over the phone to the service company. They should be able to give you a good estimate prior to arrival.
If you have not had the furnace inspected in the past couple of years, now would be a good time.
