Go to grocery store and buy 20 mule team bolax. you can find it in detargent section. Sprinkle it on the carpet, then use something to make sure that powder goes into the deep in the carpet. Leave it for a few days, and vacume.
I did that to get rid of fleas and cat odors. It worked like miracle. After this, you may still need to replace baseboad though.
