Bathtub Restoration?

scott0049 profile photo

Did a search...found nothing in the forum. I am thinking about refinishing/restoring an old nasty looking blue bathtub in a rehab I am doing as opposed to replacing it. Considering the costs of replacement with having to take out part of a wall for drain and pipe work plus put up new enclosure, I am thinking about it anyways. Has anybody done this and if so how did the refinished tub look? Can you tell? Looking for pros and cons because the big pro on this is the money. $80 compared to several hundred for replacement.

Thanks

Scott

    $80.00?

I sub it out and it costs $400 with a 5 year warranty for white, add $40 for a custom color.

I just did two tubs last week. They were both already white and not REAL bad but bad enough they needed attention. Home depot has a do it yourself kit for around $29.00. I was a bit hesitant to try it, but for $29 dollars thats all i had to loose. Both tubs turned out really nice. A friend of mine had Pink tiles in his shower and he used it on those 3 years ago and they still look great.

I did this on my first rehab. I bought the Klenks kit and applied it using an air sprayer instead of a brush. Came out great.

Boy, I wish I would have known this about 2 months ago.

I had a similar nasty blue wall tile and wanted to paint it with the Home Depot stuff, but the rep behind the counter said it was only for flat, level surfaces, not walls. So I ended up putting in a surround. Not a big deal, but it cost a lot more and was a pain in the neck.

I might try this stuff next time, though.
