I have a friend that owns a gas station in West Los Angeles, he installed an ATM in his station several years ago. He is doing extremely well with it, albeit the foot traffic is tremendous. He has also opened a deli that does very well.
People seem to cherish convenience, it all depends on the location. I would never use an independent ATM but hundreds of people do everyday.
