Asbestos On Old Pipes

chef1234 profile photo

Hi,

I have asbestos surrounding one of the pipes in a property that I own. I have heard that asbestos removal is costly and that maybe I could remove it myself? What do you guys recommend in terms of removal or "remediation"?

Thanks,

    Chef,

You should start with the city codes in Philly, then check your state DEQ requirements as well as the feds. The liability that could be incurred may or may not be huge not only with improper removal but improper disposal as well.

It could also be dependent upon your perceived level of professionalism - Do you just own this one unit or are you managing 10, 20 etc... Do you have a license? In Virginia if you own over 5 units(if I remember correctly) you fall under the landlord tenant laws so if you do end up in court over something you are looked at as having a higher of awareness of the codes and laws.

Prices are different across the country.

You could call your local investor association and ask for a referral.

You could also do some research (online, yellowpages, etc.) and call around. Get some prices. Compare prices. Get references. Etc.
