Buying A Duplex

I am a first-timer to this forum so I'll appreciate any input I can get. I am considering buying a duplex and then renting one unit to my son who is a low income musician. It will be his job to " manage" the property in return for low rent. I have owned rental property before but I don't know the basics of looking for a good duplex rental unit.
