Limit On Roomates

Hi All, Will it be legal to buy a house and rent 3 bedrooms to different roomates? if so, how about closing off the living room, family room and converting the garage, then renting to 7-8 people also would i have more power selecting the tenants, if i have a room saved for myself, so they will be my roomates, even though i won't be sleeping there most of the time. thanks you all. ;-)
